How to Build a Wooden Terrace: Step‑by‑Step Guide

1. Sub‑base Preparation

The preparatory phase is crucial for terrace longevity. The sub‑base must be perfectly levelled with sand, gravel or compacted crushed stone. Paving stones or concrete slabs are then laid to form a stable base.

Key point: never build directly on lawn. Natural ground does not provide the necessary stability and may settle over time.

2. Installing the Sub‑structure

The load‑bearing frame is set with joists spaced about 40 cm apart, using a level for perfect alignment. A minimum slope of 2 % must be created to drain rainwater. For grooved boards, the slope follows the board length.

3. Laying the Boards

Boards are installed with uniform gaps to allow material expansion and water drainage. A folding rule can act as a spacer for even spacing. Each board is firmly fixed to the sub‑structure with exterior‑grade screws.

4. Finishing Touches

Once all boards are laid, excess length is trimmed along the perimeter. Visible sides can be clad with matching boards for a uniform, professional look.


Permits Required for Construction

Italian regulations differentiate several cases:

Open terrace: generally needs no specific permit if distance from boundaries and size limits are respected.

Enclosed veranda: adding fixed glazing requires a Building Permit from the municipality because it creates new habitable volume.

Roof‑slab conversion: turning an existing slab into a terrace always requires a Building Permit due to change of use.

Before starting work, always consult the municipal technical office to check any local constraints.


Construction Costs

The cost of a wooden terrace depends on several factors:

  • Composite wood: €40 – €100 /m² for decking
  • Sub‑structure: €15 – €25 /m²

Labour

  • Basic installation: €25 – €40 /m²
  • Complex works: €40 – €60 /m²

  • Sub‑base preparation: €10 – €20 /m²
  • Permits and paperwork: €500 – €1,500
  • Accessories and finishes: €5 – €15 /m²
