Timber construction systems: comparing four typologies

Very often when people talk about timber construction, they immediately think of the platform‑frame “American method” that is always cited for comparison, without realising that there are several construction systems offering different advantages.

In this article we’ll look more closely at timber construction systems, the advantages they offer, which systems exist and are used, and above all how efficient and fast timber construction can be on site.

What are the main timber construction systems?

The main timber construction systems are distinguished by their different structural types, which fall into four categories:


Platform frame

This system, developed in Northern Europe, is very common in North America. The platform‑frame system is generally based on a reinforced‑concrete raft foundation.

Each wall or floor consists of vertical glulam or KVH studs set at intervals. Structural OSB sheathing panels are fixed to the exterior faces, fully covering the frame with improved‑grip nails and metal angles.


Blockhouse

This system uses solid‑wood nordic‑spruce logs—squared and planed—with double or triple tongue‑and‑groove joints. The logs are stacked horizontally to form load‑bearing or partition walls.

Although blockhouse is the oldest system for building timber houses, it is becoming less popular, especially in urban areas and since the technological refinement of frame and X‑LAM systems.

Buildings constructed with the blockhouse system are mostly found in alpine regions.


Timber frame

This system uses load‑bearing walls formed by a stud frame that is later filled with insulation and stiffened with OSB panels.

The resulting wall behaves as a braced frame under horizontal loads, maintaining high stiffness with low structural mass. Services are run inside through a battens system in walls and floors, creating a technical void for plumbing, HVAC and electrics.

This service cavity can be further insulated to maximise the building envelope’s thermal and acoustic performance.


X‑LAM system

Another construction system is X‑LAM, which uses special timber panels.
X‑LAM panels are produced by gluing several layers of timber boards about 2 cm thick, always an odd number. The boards are glued in alternating directions so that the fibres of successive layers are orthogonal, thereby enhancing the final panel’s performance.

Typically, the boards are coniferous timber, kiln‑dried to protect against biological attack.
To maintain the wood’s natural quality, the adhesives used contain no formaldehyde or other harmful chemicals.

Panels can be cut to various shapes and sizes according to the building’s architectural design.


What advantages do timber structures offer?

Timber houses are a true masterpiece of so‑called bio‑construction. They have nothing to envy compared with the masonry structures so widespread in Italy.

On the contrary, timber houses offer a range of advantages far greater than traditional buildings.

Unfortunately, this sector is still under‑chosen due to the lack of information, so it is sometimes overlooked. In Nordic countries, by contrast, timber houses have long been the first choice. Recently, however, timber houses have been gaining ground in Italy because of the many benefits they offer.

The advantages of a timber house include:

  • Energy saving: Wood is an excellent insulator and an ecological material.
  • Shorter construction times: In many timber systems—for example platform frame—walls arrive on site already pre‑assembled, thereby reducing site time.
  • Fire resistance: Contrary to popular belief, wood is fire‑resistant and has low thermal conductivity. In a fire only the outer layer burns; charring progresses more slowly than in masonry structures.
  • Earthquake resistance: Wood is a flexible material, making it inherently seismic‑resistant. A timber building will sway and withstand ground motion.
  • Durability: It’s time to dispel another myth. Timber houses are durable over time without requiring special maintenance. Modern technologies and treatments make wood an extremely long‑lasting material.

Currently, the most widespread system for timber buildings is undoubtedly the platform frame, since each floor deck serves as the platform for the next level. Walls are therefore built directly in situ and fixed to the deck, or they are prefabricated in the factory and then transported and assembled on site. The construction types described today share the solidity and adaptability of wood, but they meet different requirements.
